7 GREAT APPS FOR SENIORS

Most of us rely pretty heavily on our smartphones, and especially those handy apps. The good news is that more and more apps are being developed that are perfect for seniors. Here are seven of our favorites:

  • Magnifying Glass: That is what the app is called and that is exactly what it is. How many times have you had to struggle to read the fine print on a medicine bottle, or the menu in a dimly lit restaurant? This app lets you instantly magnify anything and even shine light on what you’re trying to read. We like this one a lot.
  • Face Time: If you do not yet have Face Time on your phone, now is the best time ever to install it on your phone or tablet. Video chat with anyone from anywhere, anytime. During this time while many seniors are quarantined, connecting with loved ones becomes as easy as a phone call once you have Face Time. This app allows you to communicate with groups of people, rather than just one person at a time. The app works with WiFi or cellular.
  • Our Time: Over 50 and looking for love? You’re not alone. That’s why Our Time, a dating site for seniors, has gained massive popularity. Before you purchase a monthly plan, you can use the service for free. This gives you an opportunity to familiarize yourself with the site, see how it works, and determine if it is appropriate for you. You can search the member profiles independently, and you can opt to have the site suggest matches for you. Our Time has great instant messaging and chat features.
  • Blood Pressure Apps: There are several different apps that allow you to use your phone to check and monitor your blood pressure. Some of them allow you to just check your pressure by placing one finger on the screen. Others use a special cuff that connects to the phone. Some of the apps allow you to keep daily records of your pressure, and even text them to your doctor if he or she needs them. Check the App Store and determine which app is best of your needs.
  • Good Rx: Prescription drug prices continue to skyrocket, and some pharmacies charge more for certain drugs than other pharmacies charge. This app lets you compare prices from hundreds of pharmacies, so that you can get the best deals. The app also offers discount coupons, tracks prices and sends you savings alerts. You can also use the app to remind you when it’s time to refill your prescriptions.
  • Senior Discounts + Coupons: This app lives up to its name. Seniors can use this app to save money at restaurants, grocery stores, theaters and more. The app offers an extensive guide to businesses nationwide and lets you know what discounts are available to you. The app features an easy-to-navigate database of businesses all sorted by category. Very handy.
  • Lumosity Brain Training: With more than 50 activities, this app is great for doing memory exercises, testing your problem-solving abilities and cognitive skills. The app is frequently updated with new challenges. The app creates sets of games that are tailored to your needs, and allows you to sharpen your skills with regular use.
