SENIOR DISCOUNTS 2019

SENIOR DISCOUNTS 2019

SENIOR DISCOUNTS 2019

One of the great perks of getting older is the beloved “Senior Discount.” Before we get into the specifics, let’s consider the two main questions about these breaks. First, why do seniors even get discounts? That one is simple. The senior discount movement started many years ago when seniors were less well, less able and probably not working as much as some of our seniors do today. Then it became an American tradition that continues to this day.

The second question: Why do businesses still offer senior discounts? First, by offering a discount, a business might attract many new customers, many of whom are Baby Boomers with generous disposable income. Second, discounts engender good will among consumers. Finally, businesses can use senior discount items as “loss leaders,” meaning that they may take a slight loss on the promoted item, but while the senior is in the store, he or she is likely to do more shopping.

Now that we have that out of the way, here some of our favorite ongoing senior discounts:

  • KOHL’S: With over 1100 stores nationwide, chances are there is one near you. If you are over age 60, mark your calendars for Wednesdays, when Kohl’s offers 15 percent off their merchandise.
  • WALGREENS: Once a month Walgreens offers a 20 percent discount for seniors over 65. The catch? You must be an AARP member, and you must have a Walgreens Balance Rewards Card. (But come on – we all have a Balance Rewards Card, right?)
  • AARP:  Great savings on prescriptions: Members and their families save an average of 61 percent on prescriptions that Medicare Part D does not cover.
  • AVIS: AARP Members can save up to 30% off Avis base rates when making a reservation with Avis Worldwide Discount (AWD) number A359807.
  • LENSCRAFTERS: 30% off a complete pair (frame and lenses) with your AARP Membership. Upgrade to Transitions Signature® to receive 40% off the lenses.
  • BONEFISH GRILL: AARP members get 10 percent off all menu items. (Have you tried the blackened fish sandwich with “bang bang” sauce?  Trust us on this one).
  • SPRINT: New savings for customers who are switching and are of the age 55 or older. Two lines for $35/month/line. “Ask for the Unlimited 55+” plan. Unlimited Talk, Text and Data. (This is a limited time offer. Sprint has not published an end date)
