LISTEN AND EARN: PERSONAL FINANCE PODCASTS

Once there was radio. If you are old enough to remember your family gathered around  listening to “must-listen” radio shows, just know we have come full circle. Today it is all about podcasts, the 21st century version of must listen. Even If you weren’t born during the golden age of radio, you are invited to tune in

Podcasts, for the uninitiated, are online audio shows about almost anything you can think of. Perfect for the current information age, podcasts cover topics ranging from politics to entertainment to sports to…yes, even personal finance. Once again, we did the legwork (or in this case, the ear work) for you, finding  five great podcasts all about one of your favorite topics – money. Here are out top choices:

PLANET MONEY

When traditional radio crosses over into the podcast arena, the result is NPR’s Planet Money, which bills itself as “The Economy Explained” (finally!). In 30 minutes or less, various hosts explain economic issues for the masses, rather than for the experts. If the major economic indicators are all Greek to you, or if you wonder what a wealth tax is, or even why the price of a coke stayed the same for 70 years, tune in. If listening to the news on the way to work every day puts a cloud over your day, go podcast.

THE MONEY GUY SHOW

Brian Preston and Bo Hanson are wealth managers who share one big thing in common—common sense. Their podcast tackles real world money topics and issues relevant to a lot of us. Recent episodes:

How to Bulletproof Your Marriage Financially; How to Invest a Windfall of Cash; Use Whole Life Insurance to Pay Estate Taxes? See what we mean? Common sense topics. These are just two regular guys who happen to know how to break down complex financial issues into easily understandable language. And who doesn’t want that!

FINANCIAL FREEDOM

Who better to learn financial independence from than a guy who actually retired at 30? Grant Sabatier is that guy, and his podcast covers everything from entrepreneurship to early retirement to the relationship of money and happiness. Sabatier has a knack for landing really interesting guests for his podcasts, including entrepreneurs, authors and even big names like Tony Robbins. Sabatier knows a lot about how to make money and how to save it. Within five years of graduating college he made his first million dollars. A millennial millionaire – now that’s worth listening to.

HER MONEY

Chances are you have seen Jean Chatzky on The Today Show, where she doles out investing advice and follows economic trends in her role as financial editor. Her Money is a podcast that focuses on challenges and issues related to women and money. Interestingly enough, much of the advice Chatzky and her strong guest lineup offer is as relevant for men as it is for women. Bonus: There’s a lot of humor and fun in this show.

SO MONEY

We like this podcast because the host, Farnoosh Torabi, interviews fascinating people who are not only versed in finance issues, but also highly inspirational. This podcast is among the more holistic of its genre, offering smart tips on personal finance, as well as issues-oriented material that encourages people to focus on the quality of their lives. We also appreciate this podcast because it often focuses on philanthropy and the power of giving. Even billionaires and moguls know there is more to life than money.
